Catherine Mier, M.D.
Forensic Psychiatrist
Forensic Psychiatry
Forensic Psychiatry is the subspecialty of psychiatry that is concerned with the intersection of mental health and the legal system. This encompasses a wide range of issues in criminal, civil and administrative law, such as mental capacity to stand trial or enter into legal agreements, or mental state at the time of an alleged offense. Forensic psychiatrists sometimes provide care for mentally ill individuals who are in correctional custody. In addition, they are often consulted by the justice system to provide expertise when there is a question about whether mental illness has a significant impact on a particular legal proceeding. Some of the most familiar of these questions are whether a defendant is competent to stand trial, or whether they understood the nature and consequences of their actions at the time they committed a crime. Other common questions include whether a person is able to make legal decisions, such as writing a will or entering into a contract.
